A Transport Tale by ChristieLyn Diller, Director of Marketing & Communications
Let me start by saying that I love New Jersey. It is where I spent the first 18 years of my life, and while I no longer live there, I will always be a proud Jersey girl. I didn’t think it would be possible, but now I love New Jersey even more.
Why, you ask? Because of the great team at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center!
With so many fellow animal rescue organizations bringing pets from southern and western states into the DC area, you may be asking why we were sending these 11 out. The simple answer is this: Washington, DC is exploding with homeless animals in need of loving families.
Far too many animals are born or raised in the District and later abandoned or surrendered to WHS. As the only open-access shelter in DC, we take in any animal, of any species, age or breed, any time. Even with nearly 400 animals in foster care at any given time, space at our two adoption centers is always at a premium. In contrast, other rescue groups, both local and non-local, routinely find themselves with extra beds. So when the number of animals coming into our adoption centers exceeds the number being adopted out (as it most frequently does), we start to call on our friends for help.
When we arrived at St. Hubert’s, we received a wonderful and warm welcome. A team of their staff greeted us in the parking lot, fawning over each and every one of their new babies, excited and grateful for our new partnership. We know that these 11 animals have a great chance of finding their forever homes with loving families.
In total, the transport partnership with St. Hubert’s saved 22 lives that day – the 11 pets who moved to New Jersey and the 11 others who can now be housed at WHS in their former kennels.
We owe a debt of gratitude to our many partner organizations for taking in DC animals in need and helping to find them great homes. Rescue groups and shelters from Maryland to Virginia, and as far as Massachusetts, routinely answer our calls for help to house and re-home thousands of homeless DC animals each year. These partnerships allow us to devote necessary time, care and attention to the thousands of animals who wait patiently for their new families in our own adoption centers.
Thankfully, we know that DC loves DC animals. To help area families consider local adoption we are proud to offer $25 dog adoption fees for the entire month of July,* as we encourage our community to Keep Calm and Adopt a DC Dog!
A DC dog is many things, but most of all loving. Through no fault of their own, these dogs may have been abandoned or neglected, found as strays or dropped off at our adoption centers. DC dogs come in all shapes, sizes, and ages. They come from our city, and they are ready for a second chance at life and love – with you.
