Chunky, age 11, and Bunky, 13, are two senior Labrador dogs who came to our New York Avenue shelter after being found on Bladensburg Road near a Metro bus lot. They are affectionate, sweet-natured and as a bonus, appear to be very well house trained. They love taking walks, receiving praise and even playing together like younger dogs. Best of friends, they are a package deal. Our shelter staff unanimously agrees this is one special pair they can’t wait to see go to a forever home together.
At WHS, we believe that every adoptable senior dog can contribute positively to our quality of life, and that they all deserve to live their golden years in a safe and loving home. Thanks to a grant we received from the Grey Muzzle Organization this summer, these loveable dogs are a part of our “Golden Opportunity” promotion. To help increase adoptions of senior canines, the adoption fees for Chunky and Bunky are completely waived.
When looking to adopt, what many may not realize is that senior dogs are uniquely suited to potential adopters in our region. We are located in an urban environment, and many of our patrons have busy schedules and limited time and space to exercise their dog, making a more mature canine a good match for their lifestyles. Senior pets also tend to be calm, mild-mannered and well-trained.
WHS provides comfort and care to nearly 30,000 animals each year through its broad range of programs and services and does not set age limits on pets in its adoption program, working to place all healthy senior animals in permanent homes without time limitations. To help potential adopters consider a senior pet, the WHS Senior Companions program sponsors a portion of the adoption fee for all senior dogs and provides basic initial veterinary care. With a little extra incentive, we hope that more families will open their hearts and homes to our older and wiser companion animals.
