Sounds like a good argument for having multiple dogs, if top dog just sleeps in when then house burns down.

I have 3 dogs and when the middle one alarm barks I wait to see if the oldest responds. The other is when any of them lay there and all of a sudden cock and ear and start a low deep growl. I get an uneasy feeling if they keep it up and I'll go check. Your right that they are right there by your side. And I ALWAYS commend them for protecting me from the boogie man!
