Last Thursday, six guinea pigs were discovered in a trash can behind a
building on the 2900 block of Knox Place, SE. Two of the animals were found
dead inside a broken and filthy cage, one of the deceased guinea pigs was
pregnant. It appears the animals died
due to starvation, mite infestation, and dehydration.
Luckily
the Washington Humane Society was able to rescue the rest of the abandoned
guinea pigs. We now need the public’s help to find the person or persons who
threw these innocent creatures in the garbage. WHS is offering a $1000 reward
for justice.
The
four animals that survived being thrown in the trash were extremely
underweight, dehydrated, and infested with mites. Sadly one of the guinea pigs
succumbed to his illnesses over the weekend. WHS is nursing the three remaining
animals back to health. Luckily, they are all recovering well and now have
names: Big Mac, Apple Pie, and Small Fry,
and we hope all will be up for adoption soon.
WHS
officials are asking anyone with information to contact the Humane Law
Enforcement department at 202-BE HUMANE.
Calls are confidential and a reward is being offered for information leading to
the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators of this crime. The reward is made
possible through a special fund called the JUSTICE FUND which WHS set up
for this purpose. Donations to this fund are accepted.
