Honey is a six-year-old Pit Bull Terrier who is halfway through her third month at the Georgia Avenue Adoption Center. She's friendly, very affectionate, well-mannered, house trained, and makes a great walking buddy. So why has she been here for so long? Perhaps her age is a factor. At six years old, she's a bit too "middle-aged" for adopters looking for puppies and young dogs. Her breed may also be a factor. The sometimes negative reputation of Pit Bulls can make them harder to place. But, thanks to the Wounded Warriors of the Dog Tags program, Honey has been getting some special attention to increase her chances for finding a permanent family.
In fact, due to her polite and attentive personality, she was the first dog chosen to work with our newest group of Warriors and she became an instant favorite. Honey has been in the program for several weeks now and has improved all of her basic obedience skills, including sit, lie down, and stay, and she's even learned a few tricks that are guaranteed to impress!
This week we are very proud to announce that the dedicated work of the Warriors helped Honey earn her American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Award, making her our first Pit Bull at Georgia Avenue to receive this award.
With this recognition of her polite behavior, Honey has also been able to start visiting local school children with our Humane Educator. An ambassador for her breed, all Honey needs now is a family to love her as much as our staff and volunteers do!
Many thanks to Lab Rescue (LRR) for their support of our Dog Tags program with a large donation of bait bags and treats, which are being put to very good use to help our Warriors help dogs like Honey.
Good dog! He looks like my dog Barky.
